Although all the terms and companies offering cards can seem confusing at first, if you do your homework then learning the basics takes no time at all. Here are some hints and tips regarding the basics of using and finding a credit card:

Borrowing money

Credit cards are probably the most common way of borrowing money. Credit cards are available from so many different sources, both offline and online. There is a wide variety of different types available, and at first glance it can be very confusing. However, what you need to remember with all credit cards is that you are borrowing money, and that the credit is not free. Once you realise this then you will be in a better position to get a card that suits your needs.

Interest rates

Unless you intend to pay your credit card bill off in full each month, then you need to be aware of the interest rates of cards. The rate is calculated as APR, or Annual percentage rate. The typical rates right now are around 13-18%, depending on the company you choose. Lower interest rates are obviously better, but remember that there can be other charges as well such as late fees or transfer fees, etc. Also, if you are going to pay the money off very slowly, then you should look at other types of money lending as credit cards do have high interest rates.

Paying your bill

The options for paying your bill vary, and some cards have different requirements. A few cards require you pay the whole bill each month, but most only require that you pay a minimum payment. This is usually around 2% of the entire balance. If you are not paying back your card in full each month, then pick a card that has benefits for doing so. Some cards offer ‘cashback’ of around 0.5% or more, meaning that you get money back each time you buy something.

Fees

Most credit cards have a range of fees that you will be charged. These include fees for late payment, over-limit fees, and annual usage fees. If you know you might be late with payments sometimes, then pick a card with low late fees. Also, try and avoid cards with annual fees, unless the rest of the package is very good. Some cards have introductory offers, like no interest or fees on transfers for six months. These cards are good if you need to transfer debt or you know you can pay back the balance during the introductory period.

Debt

Remember, if you are not careful you can get into credit card debt that can be hard to get out of. Only spend what you can really afford, and try to pay back as much of the balance as you can each month. Credit cards are great for emergencies or spreading the costs of expensive items, and if you know the basics then you will get a better deal on your card.

Peter Kenny is a writer for creditcards-gb
For additional articles and an extensive resource for everything about credit cards, please visit us at Credit Cards and 0% Balance Transfers

http://www.creditcards-gb.co.uk

Related posts:

Visa Credit Card Applications

Credit Card

Credit card Q&A

Are Online Credit Card Applications Really Safe?

Credit cards guaranteed

American express

Apply for credit card

Bad Credit

Balance Transfers

Credit Card Application

Credit Card Applications

Credit Card Rewards

Credit cards

Discover

Good credit

Instant Approval

Low Interest

Mastercard

No credit

Visa

A number of tips for people who want to apply online for credit cards safely. At the same time, it is common knowledge that cases of online identity theft are frequent enough to make people be afraid of it. Is it really dangerous to order plastics via Internet? Let us see how matters stand.

There are a wide range of web-sources where consumers can make an online credit card application: Credit-Land.com, RequestCredit.com and many other sites are known to provide assistance in credit card selection and quick redirection to the bank’s official site. Credit card companies spend a lot of money on products promotion as well as providing credit card application security. Banks want to make people order cards via Internet. The reason is that it minimizes the cost of application processing: there are no extra personnel needed, as well as no expenditures on paper application forms. The information you submit goes straight to the bank’s database; that is why both the applicant and the creditor save a good deal of time.

To protect the personal and financial information you enter on the application page, SSL (secure sockets layer) protocol is used. It implies that the information is twice encrypted: when being submitted in the sending computer and being accepted by the receiving computer. This encryption method guarantees that your information will never be stolen if you submit it through the SSL protected web sites.

However, not every site is supplied with SSL protocol. There are some details to consider if you want to make a really secure online application.

1) The web page is stated to be secure or there is a name of SSL Certificate provider (Verisign, for example)

2) URL of a protected web-page usually begins with https:// (regular pages start with http://)

3) You can see a small lock in the right bottom corner of the screen

4) They ask you to register on a secure site

If you notice some or all of these features on a web site, you can be 100% your information is protected. So, you can choose the bank product for your credit situation and needs and indicate your personal information like address, annual income, social security number etc in the application form provided.

In case you do not see any of the above mentioned signs of security, or the site just seems shady, leave it and go to a reliable web source. One should also be careful with credit card offers coming by e-mail. E-mail is very vulnerable, and there is a great possibility that you will receive malicious mail (become a victim of phishing). Plus, it is required that you should have your computer protected with anti-virus programs.

Being an author of a number of articles devoted to credit score improvement and debt reducing, Anne Sparks has helped hundreds of people to make the right credit card application and build their credit. If so, you are probably a part of the growing majority of Americans – people who pay for just about everything with credit cards. From hair cuts to fast food to major appliances, more and more Americans are using credit cards to pay the bills. However, unlike money, where a dollar is a dollar, credit cards are not created equal. There are many different credit cards and they are all a bit different from each other. When you are planning to get a new credit card, you should shop around for the best bargain.

Before you decide to accept a credit card, be sure you review the interest rate the company will be charging. This is extremely important because this rate will be used on every dollar that you charge on your new credit card. Since credit cards can have interest rates that are higher than 18%, this can really add up over the years. Often, credit cards will offer a low introductory rate to people with good credit to encourage them to accept the card. This rate may shoot up if you are late with a payment or you go over the credit limit on your card, so be sure to read the fine print. Remember, if you have good credit, you can really shop around for the best deal. The higher your credit score, the lower your interest rate will be.

Another thing you should take a look at before you accept a new credit card is annual fees. Some creditors charge a yearly annual fee that is added to the credit card and treated as a part of the balance. People with less than pristine credit will usually be charged a low annual fee, but for those with bad credit, the fee can be fairly hefty. Of course, the best credit cards have no annual fee at all, but they are reserved for people who have good credit.

As you are searching for the best deal on your new credit card, be sure to shop around and look at the details of different cards. While you may think of banks when you think of creditors, there are actually several others that provide credit cards for consumers. You may be offered a card by a major credit retailer, a retail store, or an alternate lender, as well. Each of these creditors can really differ in interest rates, finance charges and additional fees. Since you could save as much as 10% in interest by checking out the different creditors, it is definitely worth the effort. Just be careful that you don’t select a card that has an extremely low introductory rate for a short period of time that becomes extremely high when the introductory period is over. As you follow these simple tips on how to find the best credit cards, you will be able to make sure that you are getting the best deal you can get. This can really help you save money over the years.

Tired of getting whacked with insane interest charges by your credit card company? src="http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js">

By: Mike Clover
What is credit scoring? Credit scoring is a system creditors use to help determine whether to give you credit. It also may be used to help decide the terms you are offered or the rate you will pay for the loan. Information about you and your credit experiences, like your bill-paying history, the number and type of accounts you have, whether you pay your bills by the date theyre due, collection actions, outstanding debt, and the age of your accounts, is collected from your credit report. Using a statistical program, creditors compare this information to the loan repayment history of consumers with similar profiles. For example, a credit scoring system awards points for each factor that helps predict who is most likely to repay a debt. A total number of points a credit score helps predict how creditworthy you are how likely it is that you will repay a loan and make the payments when theyre due.

Some insurance companies also use credit report information, along with other factors, to help predict your likelihood of filing an insurance claim and the amount of the claim. They may consider these factors when they decide whether to grant you insurance and the amount of the premium they charge. The credit scores insurance companies use sometimes are called insurance scores or credit-based insurance scores. Credit scores and credit reports

Your credit report is a key part of many credit scoring systems. Thats why it is critical to make sure your credit report is accurate. Federal law gives you the right to get a free copy of your credit reports from each of the three national consumer reporting companies once every 12 months. The Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) also gives you the right to get your credit score from the national consumer reporting companies. They are allowed to charge a reasonable fee, generally around $15, for the scores. When you buy your scores, often you get information on how you can improve it. How is a credit scoring system developed?

To develop a credit scoring system or model, a creditor or insurance company selects a random sample of its customers, or a sample of similar customers, and analyzes it statistically to identify characteristics that relate to risk. Each of the characteristics then is assigned a weight based on how strong a predictor it is of who would be a good risk. Each company may use its own scoring model, different scoring models for different types of credit or insurance, or a generic model developed by a scoring company. Under the Equal Credit Opportunity Act (ECOA), a creditors scoring system may not use certain characteristics for example, race, sex, marital status, national origin, or religion as factors. The law allows creditors to use age in properly designed scoring systems. But any credit scoring system that includes age must give equal treatment to elderly applicants.

What can I do to improve my score? Credit scoring systems are complex and vary among creditors or insurance companies and for different types of credit or insurance. If one factor changes, your score may change but improvement generally depends on how that factor relates to others the system considers. Only the business using the scoring knows what might improve your score under the particular model they use to evaluate your application. Nevertheless, scoring models usually consider the following types of information in your credit report to help compute your credit score: Have you paid your bills on time? You can count on payment history to be a significant factor. If your credit report indicates that you have paid bills late, had an account referred to collections, or declared bankruptcy, it is likely to affect your score negatively. Are you maxed out? Many scoring systems evaluate the amount of debt you have compared to your credit limits. If the amount you owe is close to your credit limit, its likely to have a negative effect on your score.

How long have you had credit? Generally, scoring systems consider the length of your credit track record. An insufficient credit history may affect your score negatively, but factors like timely payments and low balances can offset that. Have you applied for new credit lately? Many scoring systems consider whether you have applied for credit recently by looking at inquiries on your credit report. If you have applied for too many new accounts recently, it could have a negative effect on your score. Every inquiry isnt counted: for example, inquiries by creditors who are monitoring your account or looking at credit reports to make prescreened credit offers are not considered liabilities. How many credit accounts do you have and what kinds of accounts are they? Although it is generally considered a plus to have established credit accounts, too many credit card accounts may have a negative effect on your score. In addition, many scoring systems consider the type of credit accounts you have. For example, under some scoring models, loans from finance companies may have a negative effect on your credit score. Scoring models may be based on more than the information in your credit report. When you are applying for a mortgage loan, for example, the system may consider the amount of your down payment, your total debt, and your income, among other things. Improving your score significantly is likely to take some time, but it can be done. To improve your credit score under most systems, focus on paying your bills in a timely way, paying down any outstanding balances, and staying away from new debt.

Are credit scoring systems reliable? Credit scoring systems enable creditors or insurance companies to evaluate millions of applicants consistently on many different characteristics. To be statistically valid, these systems must be based on a big enough sample. They generally vary among businesses that use them. Properly designed, credit scoring systems generally enable faster, more accurate, and more impartial decisions than individual people can make. And some creditors design their systems so that some applicants those with scores not high enough to pass easily or low enough to fail absolutely are referred to a credit manager who decides whether the company or lender will extend credit. Referrals can result in discussion and negotiation between the credit manager and the would-be borrower.

What if I am denied credit or insurance, or dont get the terms I want? If you are denied credit, the ECOA requires that the creditor give you a notice with the specific reasons your application was rejected or the news that you have the right to learn the reasons if you ask within 60 days. Ask the creditor to be specific: Indefinite and vague reasons for denial are illegal. Acceptable reasons might be your income was low or you havent been employed long enough. Unacceptable reasons include you didnt meet our minimum standards or you didnt receive enough points on our credit scoring system. Sometimes you can be denied credit or insurance or initially be charged a higher premium because of information in your credit report. In that case, the FCRA requires the creditor or insurance company to give you the name, address, and phone number of the consumer reporting company that supplied the information. Contact the company to find out what your report said. This information is free if you ask for it within 60 days of being turned down for credit or insurance. The consumer reporting company can tell you whats in your report; only the creditor or insurance company can tell you why your application was denied. If a creditor or insurance company says you were denied credit or insurance because you are too near your credit limits on your credit cards, you may want to reapply after paying down your balances. Because credit scores are based on credit report information, a score often changes when the information in the credit report changes.

If youve been denied credit or insurance or didnt get the rate or terms you want, ask questions: Ask the creditor or insurance company if a credit scoring system was used. If it was, ask what characteristics or factors were used in the system, and how you can improve your application. If you get the credit or insurance, ask the creditor or insurance company whether you are getting the best rate and terms available. If youre not, ask why. Its the unique and often heart-tugging image projected by Mastercard, the most accepted and probably also the most recognized credit card in the world.

Contrary to popular belief, Mastercard is not just a brand of a card; it is also a mark that the credit card you are carrying is part of a large network of banking facilities. Mastercard is a membership organization composed of over 25,000 financial institutions. It was established in 1966 by a group of banks initially as a direct competitor of BankAmericard which was issued by Bank of America. The pioneering group was composed of United California Bank, Wells Fargo, Crocker bank and the Bank of California. This association was called Master Charge and in 1967, when the New Yorks Marine Midland bank (now HSBC Bank USA) joined the Interbank Card Association, the name Master Charge was changed to Master Charge: The Interbank Card.

Within two years, in 1968,

this small organization branched out and began to accept banking partners from South America (Mexico), Europe and even Far East Asia (Japan). This move thus created a larger network of globally competitive members, which greatly benefited all member card holders. In 1979, the wordy Master Charge: The Interbank Card was shortened to become Mastercard, one of the most trusted and recognized names in the world.

The 1980s saw an upgrade in the advantages of electronic payments all over the world through the initiatives of MasterCard. Among its achievements include the launching of the Maestro, a global online debit program, and being the first payment credit card that is accepted and issued in the highly conservative country of the Peoples Republic of China. The year 2006 saw another name change as MasterCard International was renamed to MasterCard Worldwide, signifying the reach of their already large network of global operations.

Credit cards bearing the dual circle logo of MasterCard are honoured by an immense list of retail establishments and merchants the world over. Wherever you are, if your card carries the MasterCard logo, you will never have to worry that your transaction would be declined. Thats probably the main reason why MasterCard is preferred by many: you can be sure that youre backed up by thousands of reliable institutions. They seem like such a gimmick and just a way to influence your spending. The thing is, they are everywhere now and you can’t really avoid it, so you might as well take advantage of it. I have calculated how much I think they are worth so read on.

I personally collect Air Miles and Aeroplan Points so I just talk about those. This posting is about Air Miles specifically, but the same techniques can be used to figure out Aeroplan.

Basically, I value an airmile differently depending on the product. Here is my summary.

Entertainment gifts are about 40 cents/airmile.

Travel is around 20 cents/airmile.

Gift cards are around 10 cents/airmile.

So when you see those "double your airmiles when you buy this…" deals, you can add up how much you are going to spend and how many airmiles you will get and see if it will actually pay for yourself. Unless of course you actually need what you are buying, then it doesn’t matter.

How to Collect Air Miles

Air Miles, first of all, is free and there are two different ways to collect.

You can apply for the blue Air Miles card and just keep it on you. If you shop at stores that are affiliated with them (Shell, SportChek, Turbo, Boston Pizza, Safeway, Rona, etc) then you just hand them your card and you collect some points.

You apply for a no fee BMO Mosaik Mastercard and link it to your Air Miles card you got above. They will give you 1 AirMile for every $40 you spend on their credit card. For a yearly fee you can increase the AirMiles you earn. You will get 1 for every $20 you spend for $35/year (the silver card), or you get 1 for every $15 you spend for $80/year (the gold card). The card upgrades can also give you some cheaper AirMile rates on flights.

So you may get airmiles on any purchase if you use your Mastercard and at AirMile affiliates you can "double dip" by collecting airmiles using your blue card that they give you and paying for your actual purchase with your credit card and getting airmiles from BMO.

These points can later be used to buy flights, car rentals, gift cards, tickets, electronics, and a variety of other products. With flights and car rentals you will still have to pay the taxes, but the base fees are covered by the air miles.

So this is the basics of the system. Now I will discuss what they are actually worth.

Continue reading the full article for details on how I calculated the value and if it is worth upgrading your various reward cards.

The author is from Canada and maintains the website http://thoughtsfrommylife.com.

Related posts:

Aeroplan Versus Air Miles – Comparing Them

Aeroplan Vs Airmiles – Which Program Should You Choose?

Airline Miles Credit Cards In Canada

How Your Company Can Reach Your Goal of 100% Direct Deposit

Mastercard

Account Reconciliation

Aim

Deposit Transaction

Direct Deposit

Dollar Savings

Mail Delivery

Matter What Size Your Company

Printed Checks

Time And Money

Visa Debit Card

Saving money and time on payroll while boosting employee moralRelated posts:

Direct Deposit Payroll Card | Payroll Debit Card | International Payroll Direct Deposit

Direct Deposit Debit Card

Direct Deposit Payday Loans- Lenders Deposit Loan Amount Directly To Your Bank Account

By: Sam P. src="http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js">

For companies and businesses with employees, direct deposit is an easy way to save your company time and money, while making your employees happy. Direct deposit is an electronic payment made directly to the checking or savings account of your employees, retirees, or shareholders. No matter what size your company, direct deposit offers some really useful benefits.

Using direct deposit your company will enjoy time and dollar savings. Your account reconciliation process becomes easier and your company will have a single dollar amount for the total Direct Deposit transaction. Compare this to hundreds or even thousands of individual check amounts to reconcile. Even if you’re only writing 20 payroll checks a week this means over 1,000 transactions to reconcile every year and that amount of work takes time and cost labor dollars.

Using direct deposit eliminates manual labor and mailing mistakes or wrong and incorrect addressing errors or slip ups by the mail delivery. Because, direct deposits don’t get lost or stolen like printed checks, the potential for errors is reduced. The data is only entered once and then the system saves the information and payday becomes a seamless and accurate process for paying every employee on time at the same.

Direct deposit is an incentive that attracts employees. Because the benefits of direct deposit are so evident, most employers aim to achieve 100% direct deposit in their company so all employees get paid through the same efficient method, but there are special cases.

If some of your employee

s are without a bank account, it is highly unlikely that they will be enthused about your 100% direct deposit campaign. So, how can you provide them with a viable and attractive solution, so they will be eager to participate in the company direct deposit system? The answer is to provide them with a prepaid, MasterCard or Visa debit card.

These Pre-paid, Bank issued cards are FDIC insured and carry all of the same benefits as Every other Mastercard or Visa debit card but, they have one unique advantage. They will offer accounts to employees reported to Chexsystems, some 80% (and growing Daily) of banks will no longer do.

For the employee who can’t open a bank account and is preventing you from attaining 100% direct deposit payroll, a prepaid debit card can be the final link ending the manual nightmare of hand issuing paychecks. Plus, the card is a big advantage to the employee as well.

Employees who don’t have or, can’t get a bank account are forced to cash their check at check cashing stores. These stores take 2% to 10% of your employees paycheck every week. That’s a big bite! And, the employee is forced to drive all over town, just to pay utility bills because; they can’t drop a check in the mail or use a debit card to pay their bills online or by phone like everybody else.

Estimates show the average employee earning $500 a week loses over $108.25 a month ($1,299.00 a year) just cashing their check at check cashing companies. A prepaid debit card issued to them would make any employer seem like a hero in their eyes, saving them time and money not to mention bringing them all the privileges a bank account can offer.

It’s hard to imagine how much an employee can struggle when they can’t get cash at ATMs, and they’re paying 2%-10% of their earnings to cash their check. Employees in this situation are forced to pay all their bills with money orders which cost fifty-cents or more each. By the time they buy the money order and the 37 cent stamp they’ve added almost a dollar to every bill they pay.

Prepaid debit cards are a great solution for the employee while helping your company transition smoothly to a 100% direct deposit payroll system. In the process saving your company labor dollars and helping you add to your bottom line by recovering hours spent accounting for thousands even millions of pay checks every year.

S. Credit cards are accepted all over the world from Britain to the Bahamas so you need never be stuck for cash whilst away from home again.

If you do intend to use your credit card abroad then check the expiry date on the card before you leave. Ensure you have adequate funds in your account and it is always a good idea to keep a note of your credit card details as well as the telephone numbers for your provider, just in case your card does go missing.

Having a credit card can help you to manage your finances in various ways regardless of whether you are at home or abroad. Perhaps you need to pay for something but cannot afford to do so before you receive your next pay cheque. Having a credit card can help in a situation like this as you can use it to make the purchase and then pay the balance off when payday comes around.

Credit cards can be used in many stores and shops – just look out for the logo in the retailer’s window and you know you can use your card there.

As well as paying in person, you can use your credit card to purchase goods over the telephone and online, all adding to the flexibility and convenience offered by paying with plastic.

If you are applying for a new credit card then it pays to think about how you actually utilise your card as you can then match your requirements to the different credit cards on the market.

If you plan to settle your balance in full each month then a card that has no annual fee and longer payment terms might be the most suitable for you. If you suspect you will need to carry over some of the balance from month to month then a credit card that offers a lower interest rate might be the best option.

If you plan to use your credit card to withdraw cash it is wise to look for a card with low interest and lower fees on cash advances. Some cards charge more interest for cash advances than for purchases so this is a point worth checking before making your final decision.

The annual percentage rate (APR) is the way of stating the interest rate you will pay if you carry over a balance, take out a cash advance, or transfer a balance from another card. The APR states the interest as a yearly rate so make sure you compare like for like when looking at different cards.

Adam Singleton writes for a digital marketing agency.
